In 2006, the Ontario Real Estate Association created the OREA Centre for Leadership Development. It’s goal is to develop high quality, experienced and trained leaders at OREA and at the 42 real estate associations in Ontario, Canada. Since embarking on this initiative, the OREA Centre for Leadership Development has trained hundreds of volunteer and staff leaders in skills ranging from strategic planning to managing meetings to mitigating risk.
Research conducted in the mid 2000’s indicated that volunteer leaders were gaining most of their knowledge and skills on the job. As the world in which boards and associations operate was becoming far more complicated, and the risks were becoming greater, OREA realized that this method of learning fell far short of what was required. The OREA Centre for Leadership Development was created to ensure that all volunteer leaders have the training and support they need to succeed.
Our research also indicated that the desire for volunteer leadership training went beyond the real estate industry. Many leaders in associations and non-profit organizations in a wide variety of industries lacked the necessary skills to perform competently in their volunteer roles. To address this need, the OREA Centre for Leadership Development now offers its array of courses and development opportunities to associations outside of the real estate industry.
