Examination Challenge Program Document (PDF File)

The Examination Challenge Program assists individuals who may be eligible to pursue the Interprovincial Challenge Examination and/or course-specific examinations.

Challenge examinations apply to:

  • Existing registered salespeople from other Canadian jurisdictions
  • Existing registered brokers from other Canadian jurisdictions
  • Previously registered salespeople and brokers in the Province of Ontario
  • Mortgage brokers registered in the Province of Ontario
  • Lawyers from Canadian jurisdictions
  • Individuals with specific course equivalencies
  • Salespeople or brokers from non-Canadian jurisdictions are eligible for portions of this challenge program

Interprovincial Challenge Examination
The Interprovincial Challenge Examination tests skills and competencies relating to province-specific education content. Currently, this examination measures knowledge of relevant sections in Phases 1, 2, and 3 (Residential and Commercial).

A Preparation Guide is provided by the College to assist individuals in reviewing course materials and identifying key province-specific topic matter. All rules and procedures including examination policies are detailed in the guide.

Course Specific Examinations
The Examination Challenge Program also provides examination challenges for specific registration courses. Eligible individuals are given the same examination as students involved in respective education programs leading to provisional salesperson, permanent salesperson, and broker registration.

Currently, eligibility is restricted to mortgage brokers (registered in the Province of Ontario) and persons having completed selected courses in appraisal, commercial, and industrial fields.

Procedure
The Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO) oversees the Examination Challenge Program. The Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA), its nominee for education, offers the Examination Challenge Program through the OREA Real Estate College to eligible individuals.

The Registrar makes all decisions regarding registration qualifications and educational requirements. The Registrar may secure input from the Credits Recommendation and Advisory Committee of the Council regarding applications under this program. The Committee reviews such applications and forwards recommendations to the Registrar. Eligibility is based on educational achievements and, where applicable, relevant experience. The Committee requires documentation in support of any application.

The final decision regarding eligibility rests with the Registrar of Real Estate and Business Brokers. The Registrar is empowered to exercise such powers and duties as are conferred by the Real Estate and Business Brokers Act, including all matters involving educational requirements and registration.
