What if I did not complete the three Articling Phase courses within the first two years that I am registered?
Registration renewals will not be processed until all three Articling Phase courses are completed. Other stipulations also apply. For further clarification contact:

The Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO) at 416-207-4800 or 1-800-245-6910. If the courses are not completed, you will not be allowed to trade in real estate.

May I take any Articling course before receiving my salesperson's registration?
Yes, you may take the course at any time. However, if it is taken before obtaining your salesperson registration (after completing Phase 1, 2 and 3), you are required to re-challenge the examination to receive a credit for the course.

Courses in the Articling Stage (except the remaining Phase 3 Residential or Commercial) are open to the general public. These courses are beneficial to other careers.

May I request a course extension?
No. Courses must be completed within specific time frames and no extensions are granted.

The Pre-Registration stage must be completed (including all initial and re-write examinations, if necessary) within 18 months of the original start date of Phase 1.

Application to RECO for salesperson registration must be completed within one year from the conclusion of Phase 3 (Residential or Commercial). Application to RECO for broker registration must be completed within one year from the conclusion of the Professional Real Estate Brokerage course.

The articling stage must be completed (including all initial and rewrite examinations, if necessary) within 2 years following initial salesperson registration with RECO.

E-Learning access is provided for one year from the start date of the registration education course.

Why must all individuals with a registered salesperson’s status or broker status attend mandatory education courses during each two-year registration cycle?
The real estate market is becoming increasingly complex, particularly given the ever-changing laws and regulatory controls impacting on the purchase and sale of property. Salespersons and brokers must ensure that their knowledge is up-to-date to better assist buyers, sellers, tenants, and landlords.

The Real Estate Council of Ontario is committed to ensuring public trust in the marketplace and one aspect of that vision is to ensure that all practitioners can draw upon current knowledge and information to best serve their clients. The mandatory program requires the completion of 24 continuing education units within each two-year registration cycle. Registrants will find a wide range of courses offered through providers that address professional interests as well as specific topics geared for residential and commercial fields.

I would like to become a Branch Manager of a Brokerage firm. Do I need any special qualifications other than my registered salesperson status?

If I completed the e-learning or correspondence portion of the Phase 3 Residential or Commercial, is there a time limit to register for the classroom portion of the course?
Students who enroll for the e-learning or correspondence/CD-ROM segment must, at the same time select and enroll for the subsequent 40 hour classroom segment to take place following the suggested course completion date.

You must complete Phases 1, 2 and 3 (Residential or Commercial) within 18 months from the start date of Phase 1. The articling courses must be completed within the 2 year articling stage. There is no time frame restriction other than the above.
