Who would want an MVA - Residential (Market Value Appraiser) designation?

Who would want an MVA - Residential (Market Value Appraiser) designation? Anyone wishing to raise their profile, earn additional income and 20 CEU credits at the same time.

An MVA-Residential designation is a professional designation for REALTORS who have at least five years current experience in the local real estate market and have completed an educational program in the field of residential appraisal.

Designees are active in their communities and their knowledge and constant exposure to real estate prices enables them to provide lenders with appraisal reports that realistically reflect current market values. REALTORS with an MVA-Residential designation can earn extra income by doing appraisals for banks and other organizations requiring residential market value reports.

Anyone who earns an MVA-Residential designation will also earn 20 continuing education credits (CEU’s) towards RECO’s licensing requirements.

Sid Steiner, a REALTOR in Parry Sound has held his MVA-Residential designation since 1992. “My MVA-Residential designation gives me credibility – something people can judge me by,” says Steiner. “It gets me into a lot of homes that I normally wouldn’t have reason to and I make a lot of contacts in those homes. I may just be doing a bank appraisal, but when the time comes, many people end up remembering my name and calling me to help them buy or sell a home.”

Steiner became an appraiser for Royal Bank about a year ago and last year did almost 140 appraisals. He says not only is the additional income worth it, but doing so many appraisals has made him more in tune with market trends. “I really feel my MVA gives me an edge when it comes time to list a home – it’s so important to get the vendor as much money as possible while at the same time, not over or under pricing.”

Kingston REALTOR Ron Campbell says his MVA-Residential designation lends credibility that can have an impact when he’s competing for listings. “Any extra credits behind your name are going to add to your overall package,” says Campbell. “When people see I’ve got my broker’s license and my MVA, I feel it increases their confidence in my name.”
