Home Ownership Matters campaign a success

The Ontario Real Estate Association hit the campaign trail during this fall’s provincial election with the Home Ownership Matters initiative.

The Ontario Real Estate Association hit the campaign trail during this fall’s provincial election with the Home Ownership Matters initiative. This successful campaign caught the attention of Canadian organized real estate, the media, and -- most importantly -- political candidates.

OREA’s Home Ownership Matters campaign generated more than 25 positive news stories in 15 daily newspapers across the province. These articles delivered specific messages to political parties about policy proposals, independent research and the importance of home ownership. OREA also ran a successful online advertising campaign that feature Home Ownership Matters ads on a major provincial news aggregator (a site featuring an electronic collection of news from various sources) often visited by political candidates, pundits and staff.

Real estate boards participated by organizing all-candidates meetings, running ads in local newspapers, meeting with individual candidates and submitting Home Ownership Matters surveys to political parties running locally. These activities highlighted to local candidates policy proposals that are friendly to home owners and generated discussion on how home ownership benefits Ontario.

Finally, OREA has received numerous requests from other provincial real estate boards and associations to use its campaign materials. To date, the Saskatchewan Association of REALTORS®, the British Columbia Real Estate Association, the Alberta Real Estate Association and the Manitoba Real Estate Association, have all borrowed materials from OREA’s campaign.

Although the election is over, OREA will continue to leverage the success of the Home Ownership Matters campaign by talking with politicians about the importance of home ownership to people, to communities and to Ontario. Visit www.homeownershipmatters.ca.
