Polish your knowledge of architectural styles

Your clients may be looking for a “Victorian” home, but do they want a Queen Anne, a Stick or another style from the Victorian era?

Your clients may be looking for a “Victorian” home, but do they want a Queen Anne, a Stick or another style from the Victorian era? Find out how to tell the difference (your client may not even know!) and what features are common to a certain architectural style with OREA’s new online Continuing Education course, Architectural Styles.

Architectural styles have changed dramatically over the past 200 years. The course offers Realtors a broad understanding of architectural styles, which will allow you to point out features and speak knowledgeably about them when showing a property. While this knowledge is particularly valuable in older cities with a variety of styles, it also allows you to point out influences in new home construction.

Realtors will finish this course with a clear understanding of:

• How to distinguish between different house styles by understanding what constitutes the main features of a particular style. For instance, Queen Anne homes feature complex, steep pitched roofs with a large front-facing gable, wraparound porches, rich and contrasting exterior colours and a tower at one corner of the front facade.

• How to distinguish between detached, semi-detached and attached house types.

• How floor plans can be used to distinguish between different styles of houses.

• The various types of sloped roofs and common dormer shapes.

In response to Realtor feedback, a section on modern construction has also been added to the online course. Modern homes are less likely to have one distinct style; instead drawing inspiration for certain features from historical styles. For instance, new homes will often feature steep roofs with front facing gables found on many Medieval styles in the late 1800s.

Architectural Styles earns you three Continuing Education Credits, and may be taken as an interactive online course or by correspondence.

Architectural Styles joins five other OREA online continuing education courses. For more information or to register, visit the Continuing Education section of the OREA website at www.orea/com/coned/online.asp or call Tara Hall at (416) 442-9910 ext. 420.
